people The residents from the neighborhood

For those of you curious about all the people living in my little town, here is a brief description of each. Some you might have already seen if they are selling items from the home page, and others have nothing to sell. I don't believe there will be any new residents added, since I'm making Little MO Dolls these days, and not miniature people and scenes.

Mrs. Mueller the Piano Teacher

First is Mrs. Mueller, the piano teacher. She lives in the top apartment of the duplex and gives piano lessons there. She teaches on the same piano she learned on as a child. She's firm, but patient and encouraging. For those students who do a good job on their weekly lessons, she usually has a fresh homemade chocolate chip cookie for them.

Mrs Mueller and her little student Alexis are the first people I made for the little town. Alexis' dress was especially time consuming since it was my first attempt using my technique for making clay clothing look like fabric. I also made the piano (balsa wood), the piano keys (clay), the lamp (beads & wire), sheet music and the round rug (clay). These two people were made to see if I liked making people. If I liked it, I'd make more of them, and if not, the town would have no people. Fortunately, I liked making them.

people Thursday Night Knitters

These three lovely ladies are the last surviving members of the Thursday Night Knitters Guild, held in the back room of the Textile Emporium on Main Street. They meet faithfully every week without fail to do a little knitting, a little munching on goodies they take turns bringing, and a little gossiping. Maybe a little more gossiping than anything else. Maybe they need to knit more and gab less so they have things to sell at their next fund raiser.

Ladies are non-posable, same as all the people in town. All clothing is my fabric-like clay technique. It's time consuming, but at least it's better than sewing for dolls this size. More time consuming than their clothes was the knitting I did on tapestry needles. A little hard on the fingertips.

people Elmer the pigeon feeder

Known by most people in town as "good ole Elmer the pigeon feeder", he's also known for the wonderful items he creates in his workshop. He likes his days organized and pretty much the same all the time. Feed pigeons in the morning, have breakfast at Cheap Joe's Diner or the Pub, then work in his shop in the afternoon.

Elmer has a newspaper next to him, complete with the daily Sudoku puzzle ready to solve, plus an open loaf of bread to feed the birds. His bench has balsa wood slats and clay ends. Pigeons are clay with wire feet.

people Madra the Artist

What more can be said about Madra? She loves to paint, almost as much as she loves seeing people watching her paint. Her older sister, Agnes, a member of the knitter's guild, is responsible for her unique attire.

Madra's easel is made from balsa wood, her tote and paintbrush are clay, as are all the paint tubes in the totebag. She has a water bucket, which is a plastic lid from something, with some of that craft gel water in it for the water. It works perfect, especially with the paintbrush stuck in it.

people Lillith the flower lady

Here's Lillith, hard at work digging in the dirt next to the duplex where she lives (on the ground floor). Planting as many flowers as she can cram into the space before she moves onto another space and starts over.

Lillith's seedlings are made from florist tape and wire, she dirt is unbaked clay, and the pots are actual little terra cotta pots. Her watering can, tools and gloves are all made of clay. Her seed packets were made on the computer, then printed. I put some tiny spices in each packet, so if you shake one it actually sounds like loose seeds rattling around. The watering can has more of that craft gel water in it. I'll have to watch and see how that stuff holds up over time.

people Girls jumping rope

No small town scene is complete without some little girls playing jumprope. I think trying to figure out how to make the rope and get the jumper right took longer than actually making the girls. Getting the jumper to balance and stay on one foot took some time. I considered sticking her foot down with positioning wax, but it sort of seemed like cheating, so I didn't. Eventually I got her finished and able to stand on one foot. All in all, it was a fun scene to do.

people The kite flyer

The weather is perfect and Josh got a brand new kite for his birthday and can't wait to see how it flies! This time he has to remember to stay away from the trees in the vacant lot! He's got plenty of string, so off he goes! Of course as usual, his little brother Jimmy has to tag along, like he does everywhere Josh goes. Though, for a little brother, Jimmy isn't too bad, he thinks Josh is really funny and laughs at everything Josh wants him to. Josh gave him his old balsa plane so he doesn't bother the kite, he's way too young to even touch it!! But even with a cool plane to fly, Jimmy has to take Mr. Mister, his favorite stuffed animal with him.

Kite is wire, balsa and paper, kite string is wire, the little airplane is balsa wood, and Mr. Mister is polymer clay.

people The bubble blower

Genevieve loves to blow bubbles. Mostly because they are pretty round and she loves dots. Lots of dots. She'd BE a dot if she could figure out how to accomplish it. Kayla love the bubbles too, and is torn between popping them as soon as Genevieve blows them, or watching them float away. Of course, by popping them, she's liable to get bubble stuff on her lollipop, which doesn't interest her a whole lot.

Bubble bottle and wand are clay, bottle has a paper label on it. Little bubble on wand is a clear bead with several layers of gloss sealer on it. The bubble is my favorite element of this scene. Kayla's little lollipop is made of clay on a wire stick.

people The bubble blower

Here's Luigi the baker once again. This time he's welcoming people to the grand opening of his new little bakery, and has made lots and lots of tasty goodies for people to sample. Larry Shore, the town founder, is there to offer his congratulations and perhaps try a sample or two. He likes keeping a close eye on all the town doings.

Patrons are from other scenes, such as Mrs. mueller, the piano teacher, here to have a cupcake or two. Kayla, the fan of the bubble blower, is trying a cheesecake torte.

people Inquisitive kids

These three kids were made originally to be peeking in the window at the pet shop, but they seem to get moved all over the place. Isn't it just like a little kid to try and pick up another kid, only slightly smaller than they are?

people People in a magazine!

In the July 2008 issue of American Miniaturist, there is a 14 page story about these people from my street scene. They also made the front cover! They did a really nice job and it was pretty exciting.
